Artist's Comments
This is a portrait of Sable - a pit bull / terrier mix who is a big baby doll. This is my first painting ever of a dog, and I have experimented with a different color scheme than I have ever used before. I painted this for a commission.
I think that it looks great! Not having the original pic to compare it to I can't tell you if it's a good likeness.
As a critique, I think that the main figure doesn't "pop" away from the background enough, especially considering the vividness of the background colors. I think that perhaps deepening the darkest colors on the dog would help him stand out further.
I also would recommend sharpening up the eyes and perhaps the nose a bit. I've found that if the eyes are nice and sharp that it sucks you into the image quite nicely!
Well, I'll just reiterate my comments but add this: I really recommend going down to smaller, more detail-oriented brushes when you get to the eyes. If you can manage to get those right, the rest will fall into place.
I also want to reiterate that I do think this is an excellent painting!
